Bridge Street's Newgrass Review

Friday May 19, 2017 @ 8:00 PM

Bridge Street's Newgrass Review showcases the burgeoning genre of "Newgrass," a style that blends the traditional bluegrass/folk genre with elements of rock, jazz, swing, and more! This spirited and surprising evening of string will feature sets by Collinsville String Band, award-winning banjo player Ricky Mier, and headlining, all the way from Naples, Italy...La Terza Classe! The Review starts at 8 pm on Friday May 19th, with doors at 7 pm.

To travel in Terza Classe (Third Class) in the beginning of the twentieth century was to intersect with a crossroads of people and cultures all headed to the same horizon of change and freedom. Through music, these migrants changed suffering to joy on the long journey--this spirit is what gives soul to the different members of La Terza Classe. Performing traditional and modern American folk songs from Bluegrass to Dixieland, to Early Jazz and Jug Band songs, La Terza Classe's genre-melding sound creates a style all its own, complete with typical Neapolitan theatricality!

In 2013, the band released their first LP, “Ready to Sail," and in 2016 they release their second studio work, "Folkshake" (Ad Est dell'Equatore), which was distributed on Amazon, Spotify, and iTunes. Over the years, La Terza Classe have performed in Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and in the United States. They have been featured on many American radio shows, including the famous "Blue Plate Special" and live on WDVX radio (Knoxville), and for three years have performed at "Music City Roots" in Nashville, as well as in the Live Oak Music Festival in Austin, TX. In 2015, the band participated in the “Bluegrass Contest” in Anderson, S.C., and won second place; they also had the opportunity to perform on the Main Stage of the “Boograss Bash Festival,” together with internationally recognized artists like Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Rhonda Vincent and Flatt Lonesome. La Terza Classe has been featured in several television programs, including “On the Road with Joe Bastianich” and “Fotografi”, and recently they were featured on the 2016 season of “Italy’s got Talent.” La Terza Classe also stars in the documentary film, "Flat Tyre," which chronicles the band's first trip to the US where they discovered the roots of American folk music; the film, directed by Ugo di Fenza and edited by Paolo Ielpo, won the 2016 Napoli Film Festival.

Opening sets will be performed by COLLINSVILLE STRING BAND, a homegrown bluegrass-inspired band right out of Bridge Street's backyard, and RICKY MIER, an award-winning banjo player who has shared the stage with Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten, The Punch Brothers, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and many more!
