Charlie Thomas got his start in 1958 with the Harlem-based group the Five Crowns, later to be known as the Drifters. Under their new name, the band released their first Top 10 hit "There Goes My Baby" in 1959 with Thomas' strong tenor at the vocal forefront. This marked the group's turning point as they headed into their golden age with a string of hits including the No. 1 single "Save the Last Dance For Me." Charlie Thomas and the Drifters have received a number of accolades during their decade-spanning career; with their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame a decade later, it comes as no surprise that Rolling Stone named them one of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time."
